Brief Introduction of Metal Rock Music

When it comes to Metal Music, the words “black, mysterious, rebellious” directly comes to people’s mind. In fact, the Metal Rock Music has its own soul. Also, Metal is another genre of Rock Music, which emerged from the late 1960s, and mainly in United-States, and United Kingdom. In addition, the Sweden and the United-States are the motherlands of Death Metal. However the motherlands of Black Metal are Norway and Sweden. Metal can also be divided into several genres, which are black metal, pop metal, progressive metal, glam metal, thrash metal, speed metal, and death metal.

 POP Metal:

The Pop metal is in the similar style of Pop Rock, but its rhythm is much stronger than pop rock. It also can be called a combination of heavy rock and pop music. This kind of music is much more commercial and can be easily accepted by the mainstream music industry.

 Progressive Metal:

Generally, the progressive metal are using complex and flowery style to make music, and it express a kind of cutting edge thoughts from its lyrics, sometimes it provides a thinking space to its listeners.

 Glam Metal:

The keywords for Glam Metal Music are “exaggerated appearance”. The bands of Glam Metal attract their fans through their exaggerated appearance with heavy makeup and a wild dress style when it comes to a show. Also the music style of Glam Metal are lighter and has more pop element, the lyric has a strong meaning.

 Thrash Metal:

The Trash Metal is in the similar style of Trash Rock, the rhythm are very fast, with a strong electric guitar solo and powerful double bass drum, also the vocal’s shouting style of singing makes this kind of music full of feelings.

 Speed Metal:

Like the word “speed”, the most obviously characteristic of Speed Metal Music is the speed of its rhythm, but differ from Thrash Metal, the whole rhythm is full of melody nature.

Death Metal:

The death Metal’s rhythm are very strong, and most of death metal bands are only using guitar, bass, drum and the vocal’s with a shouting style of singing.

Power Metal:

This kind of Metal Music has the both characteristics of Speed Metal and Trash Metal, but with power and an epic feel. The speed of rhythm are not as heavy as Speed Metal and Trash Metal.

Black Metal:

The main topics for Black Metal Music are to be evil, fancy the Satan and to fight against the Jesus or other religion. The rhythm of black metal are using piano, violin and other classical instruments, as well as using the female vocal’s creepy singing style always build an atmosphere of menace.

Alternative Rock

Introduction

Alternative Rock, is the entire genre of music which significantly inspired and influenced by Punk music. It emerged in the 70s, with a not a widely recognition. Since at that time, most of alternative rock bands were underground bands; and then in the 80s, it started to grown  and gained some attention; it flourished in the 90s, but for some reason, the words “Alternative rock” remained till now. In the 70s, the Alternative Rock was not very popular, it also been called as Grunge Rock Music, sometimes called as “Seattle Sound”. The emerging of Grunge Rock Music was  against the pale and empty soul behind the ornate Rock music at that time. Hence the Rock bands and artists at that time want to make the renaissance of Rock Music. And the so-called alternative is a meaning to maintain the natural color of Rock.

The style of Alternative Rock Music

The Grunge Rock Music was more influenced by punk, hard rock, and heavy metal music. It emphasizing the power sense which brought by both rhythm and harmony, and the songwriting and lyric  tends to be an expression of the Youths’ feelings of despair, sorrow and anger under the repression of the society. In fact, not every Grunge Rock Music is low-spirited style, some rock bands’ style tends to be quite ironic, such as Nirvana. Nirvana pushed the alternative rock music to became the mainstream in the 90s.

The symbol Grunge Rock bands such as Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Vilvet, Underground, Iggy Pop, MC5, The Stooges, U2, Sonic Youth, The Killers, R.E.M, Radiohead, Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Muse, and Pixies, etc.

Kurt Cobain is the soul of Nirvana with no doubt. He was born in 1967 and committed suicide on 5^th April in 1994. Since he got a guitar as a 14 year-old gift from his father, the relationship with Rock music started at that time, he and his good friend Krist Novoselic; and in the 90s, Dave Grohl made the Nirvana, and gained huge success in the rock world. Even now, people still remember them and love their music. Later Kurt Cobain found that people who loved Nirvana and chased them really did not understand the real meaning of his music, which caused him to feel lonely and sorrowful.  Kurt took drugs to run from the sorrow, but eventually he took his life, the Nirvana dissolved.

The Escape Plan (perdel) was named peacock band at the beginning of its found in 2004. It settled up formally when Gang Ang joined them in 2007. After that they became famous in “live house” because of their classic British style and unique music style.

The main style of the band is “indie pop”. Besides, they blend in some new music element like “new wave” and “post punk” to make their band smarter and more charming.

Folk-Rock

It is hard to give an accurate definition on folk-rock music. People who are into folk-rock express their joys and sorrows from life in their music.

Folk-Rock has both of the great features of folk and rock. The melody of folk-rock is simple, which came from the folk music; and the rhythm of folk-rock is strong and full of feelings, which came from rock. Also the lyric of folk-rock is easy to read and sing.

Bob Dylan’s some music in the earlier ages, reflected the combination of folk and rock music. Bob used bass guitar, drum, keyboard and other music instrument to express his folk music, which became a unique feature and lead a wave of folk-rock in the 60s. However his folk-rock music was strongly against by the folk music supporters at that time. In a summer of 1965, Bob Dylan was using an electric bass guitar to perform in a Folk Festival instead of use acoustic guitar, but was hissed off the stage by the pure-folk fans. Anyway, Bob Dylan is a great artist, which made a huge contribution to the revolution of rock music.

Other music artists have folk-rock style in their music are The Beatles, The Byrds, etc.

Rock Diary has invited Michael Cawley, a freelancer in Preston, UK, who was grown up in the age of “The Beatles” to play a folk-rock song for this section [folk-rock]. Michael Cawley used to playing folk-rock music and deeply influenced by The Beatles and other folk-rock bands at 70s. He also had got a chance to meet the Beatles’ manager, which could have made his band, The Four Hammers become more successful and professional, but for some personal reasons he missed.

Gig Review/Snow Patrol

Snow Patrol’s UK leg of their world tour includes a really impressive night at the O2 Arena in London on 12^TH February, 2012.

There is no doubt that Gary Lightbody (the vocals and guitars) have rewarded the most valuable gifts to fans of Snow patrol at The O2 on a chilly Sunday night in London. The exciting atmosphere influenced everyone who was there and the leader singer Gary Lightbody was certain warm everyone up. After the cold open of EVERYTHING, we finally have the Snow Patrol. Since Gary’s gloomy and sexy voice rang out from the O2 Arena, fans’ blood pressure and heart rate rose, they were cheering the arrival of Snow Patrol. They played several tracks in the set of old and new, including the most famous “Run” and “Chasing Cars”, and promoted their new album, plus the track “set the fire to the third bar”, that was sang with a special guest.

For “Run”, “Chasing Cars”, and “You could be happy”, the fans were touched by the gloomy and sexy voice from Gary and sang with the leader singer, which made the atmosphere very touching and high, I guess everyone was sing with their own voice and story, me too! In the middle of the live show, the special guest of this tour also brought an amazing effect. Gary sings “set the fire to the third bar” with a female singer, which warmed the live atmosphere again. Their voices are really impressive  that night.

Ended the main set with “Just say yes”was a popular and wise choice, which makes the end as  perfect as it began. Believe it or not, it really is worth a chance to  participate in Snow Patrol’s concert!

Pop Rock looks like an ambiguous name between “pop” and “rock”. After all, people think “rock music” is much more wonderful than “pop music”. Since 1960s, almost all kinds of popular music were affected by rock music in one or several aspects. However, this kind of music became more commercial and lack of core of rock itself. The real pop music appeared until 1970s and became the mainstream at the music market. Of course pop music must have wonderful tunes to make people unforgettable, but on the other aspects, pop music is lack of professional technology. Anyway, pop-rock is more attractive to the youth.

Pop-Rock became very popular in the 1970s, still, there were some famous POP-ROCK Bands/Artists born in 70s, such as: Elton John, Peter Frampton, Paul McCartney,etc.

Punk

In the late 1970s, punk is just the symbol of violence or anger. It always related with people who are living in a humdrum life, feel angry about everything, and a totally loser. Obviously the Punk-Rock music was the symbol of negative stuff. The traitorously culture is the key feature of punk music. It is the sound crying from the bottom of society’s youth punks. The lyric of punk music is very simple, and sometimes with dirty words. The main aims of Punk in the earlier ages are to express the un-satisfactions to the society and government. Afterwards it added more elements of shabbiness, old, etc, which influenced by Scotland’s clothing style and metal and gothic music elements. Then it brought a huge storm in Great Britain with un-prescient. Punk was supposed to be a form of consciousness and philosophy, but later it corrupts a style or a fashion.

In addition, punk is the avant-courier of many music styles, it also influenced in-turn by many other cultures and rock genres till now, which reflect elements of metal, gothic, heavy metal and pop, etc. Hence the current punk is not like the original punk any more, it divided into many sub-genres, such as pop-punk, punk-rock, heavy-metal punk, gothic-punk, hip-hop punk, etc. But without doubt, the punk fans still are believes the faith of “say the words with his own voice” as a punk faith.

Blues-Rock

Blues and rock music are often separate talked by the music fans with unique taste. However, in fact, Blues is led to the birth of rock and exerted the most important influence to rock music. Music became more vividly and passion when the blues combined with rock and roll.

In the 1950’s, the “electroacoustic Blues” used the amplifier appeared in Chicago and Memphis, its more traditional Chord Pattern and the original production process made it become a new music style. In addition, the word ” Blues rock”, emerged in the mid of 1950’s, at that time, the white musicians began to using “electroacoustic Blues” to make more shocked voice and was successfully approved in the white rock audiences.

 Most of the early “Blues Rock” fans are British musicians, such as “The Rolling Stones”. At the beginning of the Rolling stones’ music, it showed a rich and powerful Blues music style to the audiences. The Rolling stones transformed the traditional Blues more quickly in its rhythm with “The Yardbirds”, “The Animals” and other British bands together. Afterwords, they create a more innovative style of Rock Music with oriental taste. However there are also some British bands are firmly focus on the traditional Blues, although they insist bring the drop in sales records.
